The objective of this work was to evaluate the effects of soil management under no-tillage and conventional tillage, sequential cultivation of maize with different doses of nitrogen fertilization and crop rotation on soil chemical and physical attributes, as well as crop yield of soybeans. The study was divided into two chapters. The experimental design was randomized complete block with four replications. In first chapter we evaluated the productivity of maize in a sequential cultivation in the first and second seasons of the agricultural year 1 (2014/2015) and year 2 (2015/2016), adopting the split-plots design. The treatments of the plots were the cropping systems (CS): CS 1 ? soil management in no-tillage in all years; CS 2 ? soil management in conventional tillage in all years; CS 3 ? soil management in conventional tillage on the first year and no - tillage on year 2. The treatments of the subplots were the doses of Nitrogen in coverage 0, 50, 100, 150 e 200 kg ha-1. The second chapter was carried out to observe the chemical and physical atributes of soil for four agricultural years in crop rotation of maize, cowpea, soybean and fallow periods. The scheme of split split plot was adopted, where plots were the described cropping systems. The treatments of the subplots were the soil sampling depths: 0-5, 5-10 e 10-20 cm. The treatments of the split split plot were sampling years: year 1 - colected before maize sowing in the year 2014; year 2 - colected before maize sowing in the year 2015 and; year 4 - colected after soybean harvest in the year 2018. For the soybean crop the treatments were cropping systems. The highest yield of maize is obtained with 128 kg ha-1 of N in cover fertilization. Cropping systems under no-tillage and conventional tillage affect similarly maize yield in the first three harvests, as well as soil density. The 10 cm soil depth concentrates higher levels of the basic cations and bases saturation. The maize yield is highest in the no-tillage area, on the fourth crop in sequential cultivation. The no-tillage system, that begins by conventional tillage in the first year, is more efficient in maintaining organic matter contents over the years and at the same time gives soybean yield similar to conventional tillage. Previous work has shown that tree turnover, tree biomass and large liana densities have increased in mature tropical forest plots in the late twentieth century. These results point to a concerted shift in forest ecological processes that may already be having significant impacts on terrestrial carbon stocks, fluxes and biodiversity. However, the findings have proved controversial, partly because a rather limited number of permanent plots have been monitored for rather short periods. The aim of this paper is to characterize regional-scale patterns of 'tree turnover' (the rate with which trees die and recruit into a population) by using improved datasets now available for Amazonia that span the past 25 years. Specifically, we assess whether concerted changes in turnover are occurring, and if so whether they are general throughout the Amazon or restricted to one region or environmental zone. In addition, we ask whether they are driven by changes in recruitment, mortality or both. We find that: (i) trees 10 cm or more in diameter recruit and die twice as fast on the richer soils of southern and western Amazonia than on the poorer soils of eastern and central Amazonia; (ii) turnover rates have increased throughout Amazonia over the past two decades; (iii) mortality and recruitment rates have both increased significantly in every region and environmental zone, with the exception of mortality in eastern Amazonia; (iv) recruitment rates have consistently exceeded mortality rates; (v) absolute increases in recruitment and mortality rates are greatest in western Amazonian sites; and (vi) mortality appears to be lagging recruitment at regional scales. These spatial patterns and temporal trends are not caused by obvious artefacts in the data or the analyses. The trends cannot be directly driven by a mortality driver (such as increased drought or fragmentation-related death) because the biomass in these forests has simultaneously increased. Our findings therefore indicate that long-acting and widespread environmental changes are stimulating the growth and productivity of Amazon forests.
